This Seven-day immersion invites children into the living landscape of the Thar Desert—its ecology, history, craft traditions, and communities.

Through slow observation, hands-on engagement, and shared living, learners will explore how life adapts and thrives in one of India’s most demanding yet deeply beautiful terrains.

Landscape & Ecology

Children will venture into the heart of the Thar ecosystem, visiting the Desert National Park and the sacred grasslands of Degrai Oran. These explorations are designed to help them identify distinct desert biodiversity, understand the differences between the Aravali and Thar ecosystems, and appreciate the resilience of life in arid zones.

Traditional Wisdom

The desert teaches resourcefulness. Learners will study traditional water-harvesting systems that have sustained life here for centuries—engineering born not from excess, but necessity.

Visits to Jaisalmer Fort and Khaba Fort will provide historical context, revealing how settlements were thoughtfully designed in response to climate, scarcity, and terrain.

Culture & Community

Participants will immerse themselves in the desert’s living traditions by spending dedicated time directly within the community. Living and learning alongside Manganiyar musicians and the Bhopa people, children will deep-dive into oral epics, ritual practices, and the music shaping regional identity.

Craft Immersion

This program moves away from fleeting workshops toward patience and depth.

Each learner will choose one traditional craft—stone carving, puppetry, or woodworking—and engage with it over multiple days.

The emphasis is on process, material understanding, and respect for mastery. Craft here is not an activity. It is a relationship with time.

Camping

One night will be spent camping on the dunes.

Under open skies, learners will encounter the vastness of the landscape, the silence of the desert night, and the shifting language of wind and sand. It is often here—away from noise—that the desert speaks most clearly.
